Upgrades To The Tectate-Tijuana Rail Line Boosts Competitiveness and Development in Baja

This work represents an investment of nearly 300 millions of pesos on behalf of the State, the Federation and a private iniative

TIJUANA.-Governor Francisco Vega de Lamadrid toured continuing months of work to upgrade the Tijuana-Tecate railroad, a nearly 300 million peso investment from both the Federal Government and private funding, a strategic project that will strengthen Baja's competitiveness as well as tourist and economic development.

Vega de Lamadrid, alongside state officials, businessmen and media representatives, boarded the Tijuana-Tecate Train tour, where he was witness to infrastructure works that will improve and upgrade the railway, which is on its first stages of rehabilitation, a process that was possible thanks to the investment of 200 millions pesos from federal resources provided by the State Government, allowing the expansion the maximum capacity to 200 wagons.

During the tour, it was revealed that the Tijuana-Tecate short rail will be the only binational railway in Latin America, which will start operating next year and making this an additional investment in the next state budget.

Before boarding at the Estación Garcia warehouse, Governor Vega was informed about the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Estación Tijuana patio, which consisted in the construction of five spurs to increase the capacity to 85 wagons, the construction of offices and space for Custom and a Sagarpa office, as well as the upgrade of the Matanuco Bridge, which was originally made out of wood and was changed to a steel structure with a concrete base and slope construction. Both works cost 64,264, 459 pesos provided by federal and state monies.

Aside from the railway rehabilitation of 2.5 kilometers of major rails with loading capacity; the works of amplifying Estación Garcia consisted in building a slope with a larger number of rails as well as a ship with a surface of 4,000 square meters for product storage; the rehabilitation of Tunnel 3 in Tecate to transport double car wagons which purpose is to increase merchandise transferral from the East to the United States, all thanks to a federal and state investment of 101,522,940 pesos, plus cost for executive and indirect projects.
