Tijuana's Tourism President Issues Apology for Proposed Sex Tourism Campaign

COTUCO's president says his comments were taken out of context.

TIJUANA.- The head of the Committee of Tourism and Conventions of Tijuana (Comité de Turismo y Convenciones de Tijuana [COTUCO]), Miguel Ángel Badiola, apologized to the city's mayor and Tijuana's community in general through a statement today, after a day and a half of controversy due to the possibility of promoting sex tourism in the city.

Named "Tijuana Coqueta" (or Flirty Tijuana), the campaign was announced by Badiola in a newscast on TV and social media, causing local outrage and thousands of comments, mostly negative.

Through this statement, I offer an apology to Dr. Jorge Enrique Astiazarán Orcí, Tijuana's mayor and to the Tijuana community, my statements were taken out of context unintentionally and been wrongly interpreted because of the perspective that was given to it.

There isn't and won't be any public campaign that goes against the city's dignity. COTUCO will always endorse the intention of dignifying Tijuana's tolerance zone.

Badiola doesn't deny that the "Tijuana Coqueta" campaign exists (or ever existed), he only specified that there won't be one that'll "go against Tijuana's dignity", so we'll leave it to our readers to interpret that.

He also called Síntesis TV's coverage as "ill-intended" even though he didn't specify how or if "Tijuana Coqueta" was cancelled.
