Insurgente's brewery turns six this year, and a few weeks ago, "La Lupulosa" y "La nocturna" were at the top two places of the best beers in Mexico, according to Ratebeer. If you live in Tijuana then you must certainly know this famous owl brand.
Insurgente has its Tap Room in Tijuana's Plaza Fiesta, and every week, more and more people come to enjoy of a really nice sip of this craft beer, but... do you know the background story of this brand?
"Insurgente"
Before the craft beer boom in TIjuana, brothers Ivan and Damian Morales spent almost six hours locked in their old apartment arguing about the name of the beer, which back then was made in huge pots accommodated in some corners of their home; anyway, that night, after hundreds of milliliters of beer in their systems, the Morales brothers baptized their beer with the name of "Insurgente."
And no, it doesn't have a direct relationship with the rebel army from the Mexican Independence war (Insurgents), but with the real rebel concept. That is why the word is not plural, but singular. " It's all about questioning why we must choose this beer, and not otherS," explained Ivan.
The owl
Okey, so "Insurgente" is all about rebellion and fighting against beers with no real flavor, but, what about the owl? Ivan says that after coming up with a name, next thing on the list was looking for a mascot. Between the options were eagles and bears, but at the end they decided to pick the owl, which, even though it seems harmless, is a natural and aggressive predator.
This animal strength is equal to having a sip of craft beer without being a regular drinker, or skipping lunch to directly drink a nice beer.
