New federal environmental norm will force vehicular verification in BC

Most public transportation units in Baja California do not approve environmental vehicle verification

Within the framework of the Executive Environment Committee Meeting of the National Governors’ Conference (CONAGO for its acronym in Spanish), it was agreed that vehicular verification is mandatory in 16 states of the Republic.

In this way, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Queretaro, Jalisco, Baja California, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Michoacan and Yucatan shall comply to the guidelines set in Norm 167, which next to be published.

The secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, Rafael Pacchiano Alaman, explained that this measure implies that the entities will have to observe the new maximum limits of pollutant emissions and also the instruments with which the units are verified.

Recalling that attention to air quality problems is not only a federal responsibility and that local actions are also part of the atmospheric pollution solution, the federal official urged representatives of state authorities to take measures to reverse the trends of environmental deterioration in the main cities of the country.

In particular, he noted the need for states to commit to allocate part of their budget to the procurement of monitoring stations and provide them with the necessary maintenance. He also stressed the desirability of the states to develop their management programs to demolish and control pollutant emissions and to implement verification programs with the goal to promote the renewal of the vehicle fleet.

Pacchiano Alaman offered technical support of the SEMARNAT to the states, for the operation and maintenance of the monitoring stations, as well as for the design of the programs of air quality and verification of the motor vehicles.
