The San Diego Convention Center and its economic impact in the region

The San Diego Convention Center Corporation is a public non-profit organization which operates and maintains the San Diego Convention Center (SDCC), one of the main economic motors of the region.

In 2017, the SDCC hosted 149 events, generating a regional economic impact amounting to 1.1 billion dollars for San Diego. This is reflected in the work of a team of more than 400 employees.

More than 898,000 people assisted to the events that took place between July 2016 and June 2017, directly spending 673.9 million dollars in the region, the second largest amount of spending in the county’s history. Through this direct spending, 25.4 million dollars in hotel taxes and sales were generated for the city’s general fund.

In 2017 21 medical events took place at the SDCC. This record number of medical conferences represented 22 percent of the total assistance and 49 percent of the regional economic impact at the San Diego Convention Center.

In addition, the San Diego Convention Center set in place the largest improvements in the history of the building. Eight improvement projects obtained funding through the approval of a state loan, amounting to a total of 25.5 million dollars.
