On eve of vote, a rally for a DREAM

Law would offer undocumented students path to legalization

Supporters of the DREAM Act are holding a candlelight vigil and procession at 5 p.m. today

at Mesa College in San Diego on the eve of a Congressional vote on the proposed federal law that would legalize certain undocumented immigrant students.

Students who could legalize their status if the law is passed are scheduled to speak at the event, which will take place in front of the G Building (Humanities and Multicultural building), 7250 Mesa College Drive. San Diego Community College District Chancellor Constance Carroll is also among the scheduled speakers.

Similar demonstrations are planned throughout the country on the day before the House of Representatives is to vote on the Development, Relief and Education for Minors Act. The Senate is expected to vote on the measure before the end of the month.

The legislation would allow undocumented students who came to the United States as children to legalize their status and eventually apply for citizenship. Among the requirements are the completion of two years of college or military service.

The event in San Diego is being organized by Justice Overcoming Boundaries, an interfaith community organization, and the San Diego Dream Team, a coalition of local college students that includes undocumented immigrants. The groups organized vigils throughout San Diego County last week.
