Although California is under the purple tier and Tijuana is one step away from red, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is looking at how it can safely open the border.
This news comes after the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce sent letters to the ambassador and speculated that many of the border businesses would be ruined if restrictions are not removed for the holiday season.
On the other hand, the fact that they are contemplating how to open the border and that there are demands from both sides does not mean full assurance that the restrictions will be lifted, even for the famous "Black Friday".
According to El Imparcial, Mario Escobedo, Secretary of the SEST, said that if they do not open for this event, they will not do so for the rest of 2020. This means that they will most likely not open the border until the vaccine begins to be distributed.
For some people the restrictions are arbitrary, as the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce argued in a statement, since, of the people who crossed and have been tested for COVID-19, only 16% were Mexican residents.
Also, it should be noted that the number of cases of coronavirus is higher in San Diego than in Tijuana. In fact, today the state of California just announced that it has more than 1 million accumulated infections.
