Mystery surrounds the San Diego Sockers

Lost game could become a win

The San Diego Sockers are no longer undefeated. That’s the case for now.

The Sockers couldn’t convert the game-tying goal and fell short despite a furious fourth-quarter rally in a 5-4 loss at Cincinnati Saturday night.

Defending Premiere Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro) MVP Jeff Hughes scored twice as part of a five-goal run. But the late Sockers surge was not the only drama of the match. Turns out the result of the match can change.

After the game, Kings head coach Craig Rhodis was revealed to have used an illegal roster, suiting and playing 15 players instead of the allowed 13.

The violation has been reported to the league office for review. Cincinnati could be forced to forfeit the match.

For now, the Kings (6-1) lead the Eastern Division.

Cincinnati scored four unanswered goals in the third period before withstanding the Sockers’ furious charge late in the game, handing San Diego (6-1) its first loss of the year.

Jeff Hughes, last year’s league MVP, scored twice for the Kings while Kwame Sarkodie, Garrett Buck and Sam Fiore also scored.

Anthony Medina scored twice for the Sockers while John Krause and Diego Rivera also found the back of the net.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Sockers, who were coming off a 10-7 win at Louisville Friday.

Kraig Chiles and Nick Perera each scored a hat trick for the Sockers in that game. It was San Diego’s sixth consecutive win this year.

San Diego will certainly take a Cincinnati forfeit if the league decides on such punishment after review of Rhodis’ actions Saturday. For now, the Sockers will focus on getting some rest this week before returning to action on Dec. 29 in a U.S. Open match in Del Mar.
