Governors Marina del Pilar and Gavin Newsom meet in Mexicali

This meeting had as its main topic addressing the migration crisis that exists currently in the region, specifically in the border city of Tijuana

The governor of Baja California met with the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, in the municipality of Mexicali, where they spoke about one of the main human rights issues: immigration, whose movement has been mainly focused on the regions of Upper and Baja California. Both governors visited the facilities of the “El Peregrino” shelter in the state capital, where they addressed migrants’ needs.

The governors toured the place and spoke with people there, telling them that they had their support and, as far as their responsibilities allow, that they would continue promoting a migration policy that allows for a flexible and humanitarian flow between both nations.

“I thank our friend Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, for coming to our state and for listening to the needs of migrants from all over the world and for being a witness of the work that we do in Baja California to improve the conditions of shelters and providing the best care for all the people who arrive in our territory looking for a better life,” Ávila Olmeda stated.

For his part, the governor of California expressed his pleasure of working together with Baja California, looking for new horizons for all migrants.

Both governors agreed to continue working together so that those who migrate, either for economic reasons or due to violence in their communities, have their human rights upheld while prioritizing for families to stay together during their continuous travels.

Lastly, they stated that they will continue holding talks with the goal of promoting safe migration and guiding policies towards a more humane and empathetic way for all people who migrate.
