In an impressive example of the chain of survival, a man in San Diego was able to survive after having a heart attack

In an impressive example of the chain of survival, a man in San Diego was able to survive after going into cardiac arrest thanks to the fast reactions of his family and hard work by hospital staff.

David Mills, a 67-year-old man, had a heart attack at home. Fortunately, what could have been a fatal end was prevented thanks to his family’s quick response, who gave him CPR until health professionals arrived. This heroic act resulted in him surviving.

According to San Diego news outlet, Fox 5, Mills had a sudden heart attack caused by ventricular fibrillation (V-fib), an abnormal heart rhythm. Tri-City Medical Center, where he was treated, highlighted the importance of the chain of survival when these incidents occur.

The chain of survival started with Mills’ wife, who heard an unusual noise at home, and when she investigated, she found her husband without a pulse. Immediately, she called the hospital and her grandchild, 25-year-old Jacob, started doing CPR.

The first responders were agents of the Sheriff Department of San Diego County, who reached the home five minutes after the 911 call. They continued CPR until paramedics of the Firefighter Department of Vista arrived.

David received a total of 70 minutes of CPR both in and out of the hospital, exceeding the average time of 25 to 30 minutes. The doctor in charge explained that the chances of survival and having a favorable neurological result after 45 minutes are minimal and almost zero beyond 60 minutes. This is why David’s complete recovery is considered an exceptionally surprising case.

This incident highlights the importance of a quick response in case of emergency and highlights the valuable work carried out by family members, emergency services, and the medical staff at Tri-City Medical Center.
