Customs is looking to create SENTRI-style speedy pass to cross from San Diego to Tijuana

In the last few months, delays of up to 3 hours have been reported when going to Tijuana from San Diego

Last Friday, November 10, during the National Press Conference, after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was asked about the issue of slow border crossings from San Ysidro to Tijuana, the president made a commitment to provide a solution as soon as possible.

On Saturday, November 11, to clear up this issue, Customs Director André George Boullo was present at the military headquarters in Colonia Morelos where he pointed out that he received instructions from President López Obrador to provide a solution to this problem and speed up both pedestrian and vehicular crossings from the southern United States into Mexico.

Among the actions that they are working on, there's the expansion of 3 lanes at the El Chaparral port of entry in order to speed up the exit from San Diego to Tijuana.

On the other hand, he also mentioned that they are contemplating a speedy pass system similar to SENTRI, but from north to south. However, costs or the sector of the population for this pass has not been determined.

Other proposals that were mentioned during this conference were, for example, the creation of lanes for students and workers who cross daily into the United States.

One of the factors that are causing long lines, the Customs director stated, is the recent modifications at customs facilities where advanced technologies are being implemented to identify illegal objects such as weapons, illegal substances, or if a vehicle has been deliberately modified.

Moments later, he encouraged the population to respect traffic lights at customs booths in order to maintain order.

In the last few months, the border crossings from San Diego to Tijuana have been delayed for up to 3 hours, an unusual situation for Tijuana. The situation has been brought up during the national press conference where the president made a commitment to solve this issue as soon as possible.
