Tijuana's Xolos to play against Galaxy

USD to host match between professional soccer teams

The Los Angeles Galaxy will square off against Tijuana's Club Xoloitzcuintles in a "San Diego Classic" on March 2 at the University of San Diego.

"We're thrilled to announce this match in San Diego, a market that's important for our organization and against a team we have long wanted to play," said Tom Payne, president of operations and business of the Major League Soccer team.

"It will be a good game for us -- against a quality, proven opponent --

that will bring our pre-season to a strong end."

The Tijuana team is coached by the former player of Club América and Mexico's national team, Joaquín Del Olmo. In his first season with the team, he guided the Xoloitzcuintles to their first title in December in the second-tier league (Liga de Ascenso) of Mexico's professional soccer.

Led by their captain, Javier Gandolfi, goalkeeper Adrián Zermeño and forward Raúl Enríquez, Tijuana racked up an impressive 11-1-5 record last season.

Gandolfi, a defender from Argentina, and Zermeño, who spent eight seasons with Toluca's team and anchored Tijuana's defense, allowed only seven goals in the 21 games last season.

So far this season, Club Tijuana has a record of one loss and one tie, and has its home opener

Sunday against León.

The Galaxy begins the 2011 season on March 15 with a game against the Sounders in Seattle.
