Heated battle

Cruz Azul player gurantees win against arch rival Club America

Week 10 of the Mexican 2011 Clausura tournament brings a clash between two of the country's most popular teams who happen to be on a hot streak.

Las Aguilas of Club America host cross-town rival Cruz Azul in what is expected to be a stellar match up.

America has begun to reach a point its fans had been waiting for, one in which scoring goals and wins are almost routine.

In its last two games, coach Carlos Reinoso's team has scored a combined seven goals against Toluca and Santos-Laguna, which has helped give life to a lackluster start to a season. It has brought back some passion to its fans, who grew very critical of the club earlier in the tournament.

America's recent success has also spilled outside of the Mexican Premier division.

Las Aguilas are coming off a win against Brazilian league champion Fluminense in group play of the Copa Libertadores, South America's prestigious club tournament.

The America-Cruz Azul match up is already an intense rivalry known as "El Joven Clasico," or young classic. Add some choice words by Cruz Azul forward Emanuel Villa and this can be a recipe for a spicy game.

"I am sorry but we will beat America," Villa wrote on his Twitter account.

Cruz Azul also comes into this match with momentum in its domestic league and outside of Mexico. Los Cementeros have only lost two matches in the Clausura.

La Maquina Celeste has reached the semifinals in the CONCACAF Champions League. Cruz Azul is hoping it can carry that momentum against America, a team that has not lost to Cruz Azul at America's home stadium, Estadio Azteca.

Cruz Azul last beat America at Estadi Azteca in April of 2003 with a 3-1 win.

America comes into this match having lost four matches, two under Reinoso, who replaced the fired Manolo Lapuente earlier in the tournament.

Both teams have met 91 times since 1975. America is 32-26-33 against Cruz Azul since then.

The Xolos

Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles raked in their first home victory of the season with a 2-1 win against Correcaminos de la Universidad Autonoma Tamaulipas last week at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana.

It was the Xolos' first home win since clinching the 2010 Apertura championship last December in the Division de Ascenso, Mexico's second division league.

Tijuana will travel to Cruz Azul Hidalgo Sunday for a Week 11 match. The Xolos will try to earn the three points and try to catch Esmeraldas del Leon atop the league standings with 19 points.
