SD teams in hunt for National Cup title

Cal South tournament run through May

The National Cup youth soccer tournament for players Under-14 to U-17 began last week and some San Diego Clubs have already began to make an impact in their respective groups.

The Cal South tournament began April 16 for most teams and runs through May, with most championship matches being played weekend of May 22.

A handful of San Diego teams are trying to reach the title matches in the tournament, which features some of the best clubs in California.

Aztecs FC of South San Diego came out to a fast start winning both of its group play matches. The club beat FC Irvine 3-1 in its first match and LAFC White of Pomona in their second group match by the same score.

That puts Aztecs FC in first place of Group F in the U-17 bracket, with six points. The second and third leg of group matches are slated for this Saturday and Sunday at the San Bernardino Sports Complex.

Other notable clubs from San Diego with standout results last week include Notts Forest FC of San Diego. The club also won both of its first two group matches, taking first place in Group G, with six points.

Notts Forest is slated to take on CVU Blue of Thousand Oaks and Galaxy Banditz of Los Angeles this weekend.

Most girls' clubs played one match last weekend, with some San Diego area clubs earning three points for a win.

San Diego Surf has two teams in the U-17 division and both came away with a win. So did San Diego FC United. That same club also earned a win in the U-18 bracket.
