Mexican fans to get their kicks in fantastic playoffs

Four of most popular teams vying for slot in semifinals

The "Fantastic Four" are in the Mexican "liguilla" and they are on a path to meet in the semifinals of the 2011 Clausura Tournament.

Club America, Chivas de Guadalajara, Cruz Azul and Pumas are in and there's a chance these teams could face each other.

That would be a dream come true to Mexican soccer fans.

The regular season is over. What happened then doesn't matter. These are the teams people want to see in the playoffs.

If all four teams win their respective home-and-away series, it could set up the match-ups fans want to see.

A recent survey by Mitofsky, a consulting agency, says that 28 percent of Mexican soccer fans surveyed are Chivas fans.

America has 20-percent of followers, while 10 percent follow Cruz Azul and 8 percent are Pumas fans.

But the popularity of these teams is not the only reason why these playoffs are so sexy.

Monterrey, the defending champion, is in and the top team in the league, UANL Tigres, is one of the hottest teams in the region.

Both teams are from Monterrey and they have some of the most loyal fans within the soccer community. They mostly always sell out their home stadiums.

The remaining two teams in the eight-club playoff format are Morelia Monarcas and Potros de Atlante.

Tigres faces Chivas, Pumas takes on Monterrey, Atlante faces Cruz Azul while America and Morelia is the other quarterfinal match-up.

If the "Fantastic Four" win their respective series it would pair Chivas vs. Pumas and Cruz Azul against America.

It would be the first time these four clubs would play in the semifinals during the current two-tournament format that began in 1996.

The Xolos

Club Tijuana routed Cruz Azul Hidalgo 5-1 last week at Estadio Caliente and clinched a slot in the Liga de Ascenso semifinals. The Xolos are a step closer to being promoted to the Mexican first division. They must first face Esmeraldas de Leon, the top team in the regular season tournament, in the semifinals.
