Tijuana Book Fair to draw nearly 100,000

The ten-day event is a literary party for all ages

Tijuana.- More than 90,000 people are expected to attend the annual Tijuana Book Fair, which opened Friday and will continue through May 22.

A total of 95 authors are to participate in La Feria del Libro, being held in the Plaza Río shopping center, across the street from the Cultural Center and minutes from the San Ysidro border crossing.

They include prominent writers such as José Manuel Valenzuela, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Laura Restrepo, Sabina Berban and Rafael Tovar y de Teresa.

A focus of the fair this year is how innovations such as the iPad and e-books can be used to promote reading, said Elsa Arnaiz, the director of the Municipal Institute for Art and Culture, which organizes the popular event.

She said that 35 local, national and international publishers are scheduled to participate in the fair, noting that many of the Spanish-language books will be discounted from 10 percent to 30 percent. That should help entice Hispanics who live in San Diego County to visit the fair, she said.

The fair features a space for local artists to display their works and a pavilion for children, with storytellers and games.

The ten-day event will present lectures, workshops and poetry readings. Organizers expect that turnout for the 10-day event to surpass last year’s attendance of 90,000.

Admission to the fair is free, as are all the lectures, workshops and exhibits.
