Tijuana clinches pass to Mexico’s First Division

Xolos finally able to claim title of Liga de Ascenso

Tijuana.- The Xolos needed just two minutes to make history in this city.

Scoring goals at minutes 28 and 31, the team beat the Freseros of Irapuato 2-1 and claimed the championship of the Liga de Ascenso.

The victory at Caliente Stadium assured Tijuana’s team a promotion to the First Division, home of Mexico’s storied teams.

At minute 28 the Xolos gave the sold-out crowd of 16,000 something to roar about as Joe Corona sent the ball into the Fresero’s goal, guarded by goalkeeper Adrián Martínez.

Just three minutes later, Mauro Gerk received a pass near the enemy area and with a powerful shot scored a second goal.

When the Xolos seemed to have control of the game, Irapuato’s team showed signs of life.

In minute 37, the referee, Óscar Macías, called for a penalty shot far from Tijuana’s goal.

The Freseros were able to center the shot, which Xolos goalkeeper Leonin Pineda was not able to handle. He ended up scrambling Xolos defender Alejandro Molina, who kicked the ball into his own net.

In the second half Tijuana’s team, coached by Joaquín del Olmo, controlled all the action and thus was able to make the dream a reality: Tijuana climbing the top tier of Mexico’s futbol.
