CHULA VISTA In the middle of a financial crisis that is pummeling public education, residents of Eastlake are getting good news.
The Chula Vista Elementary School District has approved building a new school in the Windingwalk neighborhood, near the Otay Ranch shopping center.
The plan calls for the new school, whose projected cost is $28 million, to be ready to open in July of 2013.
The last time the school district inaugurated a new school was in 2007.
"It's a positive sign of a light economic recovery," said Anthony Millican, the district's spokesman.
He said the school is going up to meet a demand for additional capacity.
In addition to more houses are being built in the area, families with children are moving in to previously foreclosed homes, which all has led to a modest increase in enrollment.
Groundbreaking is planned for March for the school, which will be located in Otay Ranch Village. That's when a name will be announced.
The Chula Vista school district has 27,400 students, of which 68 percent are Latino. The district the largest one in the state for kindergarten to sixth grade -- has 45 schools in Chula Vista, Bonita, Sunnyside and southern San Diego.
