Xolos 2–1 Pumas… Tijuana goes to Quarterfinals

Raúl Enríquez saved the border squad by scoring the goal that gave the team the pass to the next round

TIJUANA, BC.- With some trouble, but without losing the title of being a superior team, Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente advanced tonight to the Copa MX Quarterfinals, after beating Pumas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) 2 goals to 1.

The match was played at Estadio Caliente and was part of Week 6, Key 3, of the 2012 Apertura edition of the cup and left the "red and black" club on first place of Group 6; the team will now play against Correcaminos de la Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) at the next phase.

After this game, the border squad has 13 points, leaving Venados del Mérida FC on second position and without qualifying with just 12 units. At the Standings, Tijuana proved itself to be between the greatest and claimed the fourth place, just behind Tuzos del Pachuca, Rayos del Necaxa and Club San Luis.

The game

Xolos started with a lot of ball possession during the first minutes of play, showing hunger of a good victory against Pumas UNAM; the visiting team sent an alternative squad for this match, after being disqualified from the cup.

The first goal came after a good play by Argentinian-born, and now Mexican, Diego Olsina, who managed to get a cross inside the box where Paraguayan defender Pablo César Aguilar would head the ball inside the net for the 1-0.

After the goal, the university club started to press more and more at the front area, thanks to plays made by Jaime Lozano; Club Tijuana would endure the pressure.

But Pumas was so insistent that at the 33' mark, a cross was put down by Eduardo Herrera, to leave Alfonso Nieto free to score against the goal defended by Adrián Zermeño;

this meant the equalizer for the visitors.

Tijuana tried to come back, but went to half time with a 1-1 score on the electronic board.

California-born midfielder Joe Corona entered the second half, and this was a big benefit for the team that had more control over the ball and more attacking opportunities; this was very noticeable when at the 68 minute, Raúl Enríquez would score the second goal of the night for the border crew, putting things 2-1 now.

Xolos would continue looking for another shot at goal, while Pumas was lost on the field of the Estadio Caliente.

The referee would whistle the end of the game and gave the last pass of the season to the next round of Copa MX to Tijuana, that will take on the Correcaminos UAT this September 25, 26 or 27 at Marte R. Gómez in Tamaulipas.

Xoloitzcuintles will now focus on Saturday's match against Zorros del Atlas from Liga MX; the game will be played at 7:30PM on the field of the Caliente stadium as part of Week 9.
