Electric system failure may be the cause

MEXICO. - At least fourteen people were killed and eighty wounded by an explosion at the headquarters of Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) in Mexico City yesterday, said the Minister of the Interior, Miguel Angel Osorio Chong.

"There may be more" fatalities, said the senior official to reporters outside the headquarters of the company in Mexico City.

The explosion happened at around 4p.m. local time, and according to some reports that have not been officially confirmed, the blast could be due to a problem in the electrical system or an accumulation of gas in the power plant that supplies the complex.

Pemex, in a message through their Twitter account said, "Unfortunately we have confirmed 14 people dead and 80 injured."

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and senior officials have been taken to the location of the explosion, and the area has been cordoned off by the army and police.
