Carolina Bustamante, Woman of the Year 2012

Honored for her fight against human trafficking

TIJUANA: After promoting awareness and launching a prevention campaign "You are not merchandise," the Binational Hearts Network in Tijuana honored the president of the Municipal DIF, Carolina Bustamante Aubanel, with the "Woman of the Year 2012 " award.

This award was delivered by the president of the association Binational Hearts Network, Alma Tucker, and the Consul General of the United States in Tijuana, Andrew S. E. Erickson.

The Binational Forum "Unite Against Human Trafficking" was held at the U.S. consulate premises, where the state attorney general, Rommel Moreno Manjarrez, was also recognized as "Man of the Year 2012", for his contribution in the fight against severe crimes and commercial sexual exploitation.

Bustamante, thanked everyone for the honor of being chosen as "Woman of the Year 2012", and made it clear that the struggle to rescue victims from human trafficking is daily, because this phenomenon knows no boundaries and grows every day.

She said, "This is a daily job and the Municipal DIF contributed into this effort in the campaign aimed to raise awareness, awareness and prevention towards children, the youth, parents, educators and the general public."

She also thanked all the civil societies like the Binational Hearts Network, and made it clear that without the support from everyone involved, the approval and publication of the general law to prevent, sanction , eradicate and punish those who commit these type of acts would of not been possible. Bustamante also mentioned as of the results of this effort, a special unit from the PGJE was created to fight against Human Trafficking.

So far, thanks to this campaign 118 victims of human trafficking have been rescued, and hundreds of complaints and traffickers have been processed.

The next project is to build a shelter in Tijuana to assist victims, and provide them with help and support to overcome this trauma. This shelter would be the fourth of its kind nationwide.
