Tunnel that leads into the United States discovered

17 people arrested

Mexico. - Mexican authorities located an underground tunnel that was under construction in the city of Tijuana, Baja California, and arrested 17 people.

The tunnel has a depth of 10 meters and is 370 meters long, but did not have an outlet into the U.S. yet, said police sources that were quoted by the newspaper Frontera on their website.

According to the newspaper, on the site where the tunnel was discovered, 17 people who were working on the excavation were arrested.

The newspaper El Universal also published on its website that troops from the Mexican Army detained several suspects who were outside a warehouse, and proceeded to search the property, where they found the mouth of the tunnel that was 1.20 by 0.80 meters.

The tunnel had artificial lighting and ventilation, a hydraulic system to descend to a depth of 10 meters, as well as rails to guide a "basket" similar to those used in mines that are equipped with motor.

There were also several packages of marijuana found, about 15 kilos worth.

Those who were arrested along with the drugs were turned over to the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

In recent years dozens of these underground tunnels have been discovered, which are typically used to smuggle large quantities of drugs from Mexico's border into the United States.
