Two Female Officers Die in Drunk Driver Crash

Their vehicle was crushed by a van

Two officers assigned to the Tourist Section of the Municipal Police died this morning at the intersection of Eighth Street and Avenue Ocampo, Zona Centro, when their vehicle was crushed by a van whose driver’s blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.

The the two female officers were Laura González and Esmeralda Ortiz Wonders Zazueta, 32 and 36 years old, while the suspected responsible for the accident was Tito Alberto Peraza Maciel; 44 years old.

At about 3:00AM the officers were aboard a 1995 Mazda Miata traveling along Eighth Street, towards the Boulevard Sanchez Taboada.

Behind them was a Dodge Nitro 2007, silver, with Baja California license plates AJP4330, property of the business Proyectistas de Servicios, S. A. de C. V, who Peraza Maciel ran.

By the excessive speed, the ford located at the junction with Ocampo acted as a launching pad for the wagon, which rose a few feet and fell on top of the car that the officers were driving, whom died instantly.

Due to the speed the Nitro continued uncontrollably through Eighth Street, and in the section between Ocampo and Sirak Baloyan, trying to escape hitting five parked vehicles, a metal pole and the support of a parking structure. In a few minutes paramedics from the Red Cross attended to aid the officers but all of their efforts proved fruitless.

Meanwhile Municipal Police captured the suspect. According to the doctor on duty at Municipal Health Services, the suspect had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, so he was turned over to the public prosecutor under the charge of manslaughter.

The Municipal Public Security Secretariat (SSPM) and the Directorate General of Traffic Police and on behalf of XX City Council, lamented the death of the official Laura Zazueta and Esmeralda Gonzalez Ortiz Wonders, whose lives were cut short by the irresponsibility of a drunk driver, and express to the families of both their condolences.
