Comicpalooza 2013 in Houston, Texas

"Latinos love science fiction, but we are not famous for that"

Thousands of comic book fans and of the world of superheroes and science fiction productions of the United States and other twenty countries are meeting this weekend in Houston, Texas to participate in one of the biggest comic fairs in the United States.

Since yesterday (Friday) to Sunday the underworld of the unreal comes alive in Comicpalooza 2013, which this year included in their program Galacticon, to pay tribute to the science films of Hollywood that emerged in the 70’s and 80’s.

Comicpalooza, whose first edition took place in a movie theater in 2008, aims to bring together this year more than 30,000 visitors, by offering attractions that include the signing of autographs of renowned actors and cartoonists of recent times, and the sale of new products and collectibles, masks, countless characters, and the sale of video games.

Many visitors did not resist the temptation to go dressed as their favorite fictional characters, including the characters of films such as "Star Wars", "Star Trek" and "Avatar". Superhero’s such as Superman, Batman and Robin, and all kinds of costumes that defy the imagination.

For Hispanic actor Esai Morales, this event is an opportunity to demonstrate that diversity is a universal factor that is reflected in events of this nature. Morales has played roles in "La Bamba", "American Family" and "Resurrection Blvd", among others, and was invited to this event for his role of Joseph Adama in the science fiction series Caprica (2008).

"Latinos love science fiction, but we are not famous for that. Importantly renowned producers took the time to hire quality actors like Edward James Olmos and myself for lead roles," said Morales told Efe.

In his view, "we have to care more how we are presented. We always tend to come out on roles of gang members and violent ones. We should try to avoid them and do what we can to gain more respect."

Besides Morales and Olmos, invited this year were also Michelle Rodriguez, who participated in the film "Avatar" and also starred in "Fast and Furious 6", and Danny Trejo, star of "Machete".
