Indian Immigrants in Mexican territory

24 detained while traveling aboard a three-ton truck

According to the Mexican National Institue of Migration (INM), authorities in the State of Chiapas detained 24 migrants from India that "had no permission to stay legally in the country", and who were aboard a cargo truck.

The INM said that in a joint operation with the Ministry of Security and the Attorney General of Chiapas, they detected a three-ton truck traveling on a highway in the municipality of Chiapa de Corzo, within which "were 24 adult men said to be from India."

"The alleged smuggler tried to flee after a brief chase, but immigration agents and state police were able to capture him," said the INM’s newsletter.

These foreigners were assisted medically, transferred and housed in INM facilities "to determine their immigration status in the country", while the detainee was turned over to the prosecutor who specializes in crimes against migrants in the state capital Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas.
