Baja California deems San Quintin it's own City

San Quintin will become Baja Califonia's sixth municipal district in 2016

MEXICALI - The Baja California state congress ruled in favor of making San Quintin into the state's sixth municipal district starting on December 1, 2016 when the municipal congress would count on its own budget.

Last Thursday the Ensenada municipal government were suppose to give their official position on the issue and did not do so; for which their non response was taken as an "in favor of" stance. For the past 10 years the San Quintin residents have been wanting to gain autonomy. On October 28 of last year the residents held a plebiscite in which 17,580 voters out of 27,595 voted in favor of San Quintin being its own city while only 7,548 voted against.

San Quintin is characterized by its beaches and agriculture, it is located 190 kilometers from Ensenada. San Quintin has a territory of 36,941 squared kilometers close to half of all Baja California.
