SAN DIEGO - A head to head battle between Mexico's champions from the last soccer year, the Xoloitzcuintles champions of the first semester against Club America the recently crowned champions of the second semester will face off at Petco Park this Saturday at 7:30PM local time.
Club Tijuana arrives at this match under new management following the end of the Antonio Mohamed era. Jorge Almiron with new players and new ideas will will be looking for the Tijuana Xolos to continue being the team of the moment a d the team the fans identify with.
Club America is one of Mexico's biggest and most historic teams, they have recently returned to glory following one of the most epic finals in Mexican soccer. Over the summer break America has lost their super star forward Christian Benitez and their young rock solid defender Diego Reyes but they are still confident that success for them has barely gotten started.
Aldo Polo, Emmanuel Cerda, Abraham Riestra, Javier Güemez, Herculez Gomez and Dario Benedetto are the new comers into the Tijuana Xolos squad; and most of them should see action against Club America on Saturday night at Petco Park.
Both teams have seen preseason action already, America faced to two of its bitter rivals in Cruz Azul and Chivas losing both games 2-1 and 1-0 respectfully. Tijuana Xolos won their only preseason game so far 5-0 over San Diego Boca.
Tijuana Xolos and Club America faced each other in last years preseason edition of the San Diego Clasico. In that game a year ago Fidel Martinez converted a penalty kick to make the score 1-1 following a spectacular goal by Miguel Layun who had given America the lead.
