Colorado Rapids 2-0 LA Galaxy: Very flat performance by the champions

Rapids surpass Galaxy in the standings following the win.

DENVER – Los Angeles Galaxy suffer a 2-0 away loss to Colorado Rapids who now pass the Galaxy in the Western Conference standings. LA will sit in forth place for now waiting for Whitecaps, Dallas, and Seattle to make up games; Galaxy could fall as far back as 7th place once all of these teams make up their games.

Not too much action in the first half of the match, both Colorado and Los Angeles moved the ball up the field slowly and with caution to not get hit in the counter attack. With a real lack of play creation long range shots became the most dangerous weapon of the game for both teams.

In the 14th minute Hector Jimenez had the first of the long range shots, followed by Juninho in the 21st minute. Both of the Galaxy’s midfielder’s shots went wide of the goal.

In the 33rd Nick LaBrocca from Colorado on his last play of the game before being subbed out with a groin injury, fired a shot that went over the head of Galaxy goalkeeper and hit the cross.

The only other way to produce danger besides long range shots in a closed out game is set pieces. In the 41st minute Honduran international and former Premier League player with Wigan Henry Thomas opened up the scoring with a solid header off of a corner kick to give the Rapids the one goal lead before the halftime break.

Colorado got the second half off to a fast start doubling their lead only two minutes into the second half. In a quick one-two play between Dillon Powers and Edson Buddle lead to the Powers goal to make the score 2-0 in favor of the home side.

Galaxy was very unorganized throughout the second half and never looked like producing a comeback. Youngster Gyasi Zardes had a pair of chances; one with his head and one with a shot from outside of the box in the 87th and 88th minute respectfully. And that was all that LA could produce.

Galaxy will now take a break from MLS play and focus on their participation on the friendly international tournament where they will face Real Madrid next Thursday in Phoenix Arizona.
