NATIONAL CITY - Kimball Elementary School had some special guest today that brought with them some gifts. The National Football League through the San Diego Chargers organization and their partners Scholastic Book Fairs gave away 400 books to the students of the school.

Defensive End and Safety Kendall Reyes and Darrell Stuckey here on hand along with two of the Chargers Cheerleaders to spend time with the kids and to explain the importance of reading and getting outside and playing. They also took time to read the children a story.

Kimball Elementary which is the first school in the district to implement a Bilingual program was chosen by Scholastic Book Fairs to receive the the help offered by the NFL over other schools in the county. The student demographics, the community, and the fact that the school is labeled "Title One" by the federal government; which means that there is a high poverty level were all taken into consideration when choosing the winning school.

"Kimball was chosen largely because of it's population and because this is in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Also it was determined that these kids could really use the help to have access to books." Said Alan Gilreath of Scholastic Book Fairs.

The principal of Kimball Elementary Sonia Ruan who is over seeing the inaugural year of the bilingual program said that this is program is not just for Hispanic kids, but for all parents who want their children to dominate both languages. The bilingual atmosphere is felt upon arrival; as both she and her staff of teachers instructed the students in by speaking both English and Spanish before the start of the assembly.

The kids were all very excited to recive the visit from Chargers players. "We prepared for the event by making various posters, and making sure all students knew the importance of being on their best behaviors and paying attention during the event." Said Ruan.

The book fair will take place inside Kimball Elementary School starting tonight and concluding on Friday. The students and their families will have the opportunity to purchase books of all types, English and Spanish books will be available. All students will count on the support from the NFL/San Diego Chargers and Scholastic Book Fairs and receive various discounts at the time of purchasing the books.
