MEXICO - More than half of the regular season of the Clausura 2014 season is in the book and the tournament is starting to heat up. Cruz Azul and Toluca seem to be pulling away and have their playoff tickets already sealed; while most of the remaining teams still have possibilities.
Queretaro 0-2 Toluca
Toluca reached the same amount of points as Cruz Azul for a few hours as they defeated Queretaro in the Estadio Corregidora to kickoff Week 11 in the only Friday night match. With second half goals from Pablo Velazquez and Edy Brambila the visitors were able to take the three points.
Cruz Azul 2-1 Tijuana Xolos
Club Tijuana seemed to be more concern with their Wednesday night CONCACAF Champions League match against LA Galaxy as they went into Mexico City with an alternative lineup. The Xolos were dreaming of a huge upset when they took a surprising 0-1 lead to halftime, but the home side who dominated the entire game was able to turn the score around with two long shots from Marco Fabian.
Veracruz 0-1 Atlas
Atlas took a big step to salvation when they traveled to the port of Veracruz and took a one goal win over the newest member of the first division. Veracruz remain at the bottom of the league table this season with the loss, and second from bottom in the coefficient table only slightly better than Atlante.
Monterrey 0-1 Morelia
The terrible season for both Monterrey and Morelia continued on Saturday night. Morelia were the least worse in this match and were able to take away the three points on the night were they debuted their 4th manager of the season. Monterrey remain at the bottom of the league table only better than Veracruz on goal difference.
Santos 3-1 Pachuca
The resurgence of Santos Laguna continued on Sunday as they knocked off the team who prior to the match was sitting in third place. Second half goals from Andres Renteria, Javier "Chuletita" Orozco and Oribe Peralta lead the home side to turn around a 0-1 lead that Pachuca had established in the first half through Mexican-German Jürgan Damm.
Chiapas FC 2-2 Club America
The visiting America were able to fight back twice and earn a 2-2 draw in their visit to Chiapas. Lucas Viatri gave the home side the lead with a long distance shot, and former Tijuana Xolos Pablo Cesar Aguilar tied the game for the "Aguilas". In the second half Felix Araujo gave the lead to Chiapas once again with a header. Central defender Juan Carlos "Topo" Valenzuela brought things to level terms with a header of his own 10 minutes later.
Puebla 0-1 Tigres UANL
After the horrible start to the season that Tigres had, they have now won three games in their last four matches and find themselves in 11th place; only one point away from a playoff spot. With an 81st minute goal from Damian Alvarez the visitors were able to take the three points.
Pumas UNAM 5-0 Atlante
Pumas had been in an unstoppable form until last weekend's surprise defeat to Morelia, the Mexico City side rebound in strong fashion with a five goal performance against relegation threaten Atlante. The visitors were not able to take advantage of the fact that Veracruz had lost the night before. With the win Pumas jump back to the number three spot in the league table.
Chivas Guadalajara 1-0 Club Leon
Chivas of Guadalajara got back inside of the playoff zone (7th place) with an important and confidence boosting win over the reigning Liga MX Champions Leon. A first half goal from U-17 World Champion Giovani Hernandez was enough to see the host past Leon. With the loss the visitors now find themselves in 10th place; outside of a the playoff positions. And with demanding Copa Libertadores matches in their schedule a back-to-back championship is looking highly unlikely.
