With the objective of incentivizing the entrance of Mexican companies in new markets, on the 7th and 8th of August, ProMexico Commercials Counselors exposed Baja California entrepreneurs the business opportunities that are available in Hong Kong, Italy, France, and Seattle.

The first seminar, which took place in Mexicali, was run by Hector Rodrigo Martinez Elizondo, the first secretary of Mexico in Hong Kong, and Oscar Javier Camacho Ortega, adjunct commercial counselor of Mexico in Italy. The next seminary, held in Tijuana, was run by Jose Guillermo Garza Garcia, commercial counselor of Mexico in France, and by Fernando Paz Pous, first secretary of Mexico in Seattle. Following is a summary of the business opportunities in these markets.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong, one of the four Asian tigers, has a population of 7.14 million people and a GDP per capita of $36,600 dollars, an unemployment rate of 3.2%, and is ideally located within the Asia Pacific region with easy access to Continental China.

The Pearl Delta Region, located north of Hong Kong maintains a strategic relation with the Guangdong province, China’s most prosperous; where the products with highest value added from around the world and from China are controlled and distributed.

According to the ProMexico counselor, Hong Kong is an ideal environment to conduct business, given that it is one of the economies with the lowest corruption index, an independent legal system, an open market economy and free flowing information. The following are advantages for business in the country, the rapid opening of companies, a favorable fiscal system, an International Arbitration Center, a port without tariffs and efficient intellectual protection measures.

In 2013, the direct foreign investment from France in Mexico summed to $155 million dollars, which makes it the seventh economy with greatest investment of the European Union in Mexico.

Some of the exportation opportunities to France include citric juices (traditional and organic), berries, mushrooms, grapefruit, asparagus, and litchi. Among some of the organic products with greatest demand in France are mono floral honey and its derivatives, aloe vera, and agave syrup, as well as medicinal plants in the pharmaceutical sector.

It is important to emphasize that the ProMexico office in France also serves the Maghreb (North African region that contains Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia) whose focus is in the agro alimentary, infrastructure and housing, construction material, and textile sectors.

The ProMexico counselor’s final recommendations were to look to North Africa as an exportation platform towards the European market, taking the necessary time to obtain certification before beginning the export process towards the EU, and giving special importance to package design and labeling of products for their entry into France.
