Additions to club give SD Boca needed kick

Team ends a three-game losing streak

It was much needed.

San Diego Boca FC was desperate for a win. The National Premier Soccer League team was in a funk riding a three-game losing streak.

Something had to change to help rake in a win.

And coach Eliseo "Papo" Santos' club did just that Friday night getting some relief with a 4-2 win against the Bay Area Ambassadors in front of 1,113 at Balboa Stadium.

It was a match that showed promise for Boca FC, which added some players to its roster last week and made some changes on the pitch.

Boca FC added defenders Sergio Bojorquez and Jose Coronado along with midfielders Abiel Coronado and Francisco Diaz.

The additions appeared to have paid off. Bojorquez and both Coronados helped strengthen the team's midfield.

That enabled a much more fluid attack on top, giving striker Justin Picou chances at goal. And Picou took advantage of those opportunities. He scored twice Friday to boost Boca FC's offense.

Carlos Lopez and Cameron Roget also scored for Boca FC.

All four players added to the roster earlier this week trained with the team. They are all from San Diego and appear to have enough experience to help the team throughout the season.

But Santos might make more changes on the field. He wasn't happy with his team allowing two goals against Bay Area (0-5-1), a last-place team with one of the worst defenses in the league.

"We played a better game overall, but I am still concerned about our goals against as we've allowed seven goals in the last two games," Santos said. "Offensively, I am pleased as four goals in one night is exactly where we want to be, and having Picou back up front is a large reason for that."

The scoring is welcomed by Santos.

The team couldn't find a rhythm during the three-game losing streak.

The team's previous two losses came after Boca FC gave up a late goal in both games, sending the team to third place in the Southwest division standings behind expansion club Santa Ana Winds FC and first-place club the San Diego Flash.

It was the Flash that handed Boca FC its first loss of the season April 17 in what was deemed the "Real San Diego Clasico."

Things only got worse.

But things could be changing for Boca FC with its new additions, especially after losing a handful of starters in the off season.

Midfielder Dan Antoniuk left to play in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with FC Edmonton and Abraham Gomez to the Premier Developmental League (PDL) in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) with the Thunder Bay.

"These are two players we miss but we have added some nice talent during the off season to compensate, including the signing of Forward, Juan Manuel Perez who has previously played with us before leaving and coming back after playing pro in Hungary," Santos said.

It's a long season. We have to be competitive and most importantly, play a good brand of futbol."

After Friday's win, Santos only hopes that brand of soccer will be enough to move up the Southwest standings. If a few players will make a difference, Santos might be in a good position.

"Now with new talented blood, we will see a San Diego Boca FC side that can start making its move," Santos said. "I feel we have now found those players."
