Hank Rhon to be investigated in killing of son’s girlfriend

Former mayor freed then immediately detained

TIJUANA – In the latest dramatic turn, Baja California Attorney General Rommel Moreno announced Tuesday that a person has said that Jorge Hank Rhon ordered him to kill the 24-year-old girlfriend of his son nearly two years ago.

The woman, Angélica María Muñoz Cervantes, was shot in her home on Aug. 13, 2009. She died at the hospital, where she was taken by her boyfriend, Sergio Hank Krauss.

The revelation was the latest twist in a case that has riveted Mexico since June 4, when federal authorities detained Hank Rhon and ten others at his house and confiscated an arsenal of weapons and ammunition.

Before dawn Tuesday, a district judge had freed Hank Rhon from federal custody in the case related to the weapons.

However, state authorities immediately took custody of him. They took him to two locations, including a hotel in the Río zone, where he was presumably questioned.

Rommel said that Hank Rhon would remain in custody until the investigation into the murder could be carried out. He said that it was not tied to the weapons seized at Hank Rhon’s house on June 4.
