Festivities begin to pour in Baja grape harvest

Wineries offering gourmet dinners and concerts

ENSENADA – Great and small wineries of the region are beginning their festivities to celebrate the grape harvest.

Here is sampling of events in the next week planned around "la vendimia," which celebrates the bounty of the fertile land of the Valle de Guadalupe, northeast of Ensenada. (The festivities will continue throughout the month).

Wine tour: Visit a variety of wineries in the Valle de Guadalupe on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. Cost is $31 (350 pesos) and may be obtained here.

Wine debut:Created by one of the newest houses in the state, under the supervision of enologist Víctor Torres, the first bottles of Cuatrocuatros winery will be unveiled at a celebration Saturday at 8 p.m.

Cost is of $72 (850 pesos) and tickets are available at 011.52.646.175.8325 (if dialed from U.S.).

Music and dinner: The celebration Sunday at winery Viña de Liceaga, starting at 1:30 p.m., includes music by Grupo Ingratoz and Banda el Palo Verde. There will be five food stations that will offer baked lamb and a variety of wines. Guests receive a commemorative glass. Cost is $24 (300 pesos). Wine tasting: Tijuana's Centro Cultural will offer a night of fellowship ("La noche de cofradía";) and of tasting of a wide variety of wines that belong to the independent vitners' association Provino, on Aug. 10, starting at 8 p.m. Cost is $40 (500 pesos), and may be obtained at the venue.

Gourmet dinner: Two exceptional restaurants, Biko (Mexico City) and Laja (Baja California), unite forces to serve a gourmet dinner on Aug. 11 complete with fine wines. The event, billed "A Sacred Day," will be held at the Hacienda La Lomita in the community of San Antonio de las Minas, starting at 3 p.m. Cost is $134 (1670 pesos) and tickets are available at the venue.

Tango and wine: The wineries Vinart and Hacienda Guadalupe present a gourmet dinner and wine, made from local products, plus a show that explores the history of the tango. Event is on Aug. 11, starting at 6:30 p.m., at Hotel Hacienda Guadalupe, at kilometer 81.5, on the Tecate-Ensenada highway. Cost is $78 (970 pesos).

Jazz concert: To be held at the Mogor Cellars (Cavas del Mogor) on Aug. 12, starting at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $48 (600 pesos). More information is available at 011.52.646.174.0072 or from gloria.acosta@rcvtravel.com.
