Where do you hide 2.2 tons of pot?

Smugglers bury it among vegetables headed north

TIJUANA – Military authorities intercepted a tractor-trailer bound for the United States carrying more than 2.2 tons of marijuana hidden in vegetable boxes on Sunday.

The truck, which had California plates, was discovered at the Otay Mesa border crossing, according to a statement from the Second Military Zone issued Monday. One man was arrested. The vehicle belonged to the Greñas Trucking Co., the announcement added.

The military said that the tractor-trailer carried 345 packages of marijuana, weighing a total of 4,437 pounds. The drug was incinerated.

The military has been seeing green all over the place in recent days.

Soldiers found eight fields of marijuana plants on Saturday night, covering about one acre, in a camp southeast of Tijuana. Those plants, too, were burned.

On Friday, they confiscated nearly 6.4 tons of marijuana in three locations Tijuana’s south side.

And Thursday and Friday, they detected 12 marijuana fields in Rosarito Beach, covering a total of 2.5 acres.

Despite the recent confiscations, the commander of the Second Military Zone, Gilberto Landeros, said that fewer clandestine fields have been discovered this year as compared to last year.
