Baja police detain guerrilla in Ensenada

He is a suspect in kidnapping, murder

TIJUANA – A guerrilla from southeast Mexico, wanted for kidnapping and homicide, had opened a creamery several months ago in downtown Ensenada, authorities said.

On Saturday, Baja California police detained Antonio Díaz Bahena, 49, an alleged member of the Revolutionary Army of the Insurgent People, an armed group that emerged in 1997 in the state of Guerrero.

Díaz Bahena was one of the most wanted men in Guerrero after he was charged in the kidnapping of former congressman Héctor Pineda Velázquez, on July 31, 2002.

Díaz Bahena allegedly demanded a ransom of 3 million pesos ($240,000) but only 1.5 million pesos ($120,000) was paid and, after 36 days in captivity, the ex politician was rescued.

Authorities say he was also involved in the killing of a surgeon, Rodrigo Borja García, on Aug. 7, 1999, in Ciudad Altamirano, also in Guerrero.

He had arrest warrants for both crimes. Baja California and authorities in Guerrero exchanged information about his possible presence in Ensenada for several months.

The fugitive was detained by state police Saturday. He had a shop that sold milk products in downtown Ensenada.
