Sockers survive Revolution

San Diego took care of Tijuana 6-5 in the Professional Association Soccer League

It was more of the same for the San Diego Sockers this past weekend.

They raked in another win. And don’t forget, they remain undefeated.

But it took overtime for the Sockers to seal a 6-5 win against rival Tijuana Revolucion at Estadio Furati south of the border.

Anthony Medina sent in the game-wining goal 35 seconds into overtime giving the Sockers (5-0) command of the Premier Arena Soccer League’s Western Division.

It was Medina’s second score of the match. It came off a Dan Antoniuk assist on a free kick from the top of the yellow line.

Aaron Susi added two goals and an assist for the Sockers, while Gerardo Villa scored twice for Revolucion (2-2).

San Diego goalkeeper Chris Toth helped lead the Sockers to the win with a solid performance in the fourth quarter. He made several point-blank fourth quarter saves in his first career start for the Sockers.

Toth was one of a handful of players who didn’t make the trip to Tijuana as San Diego opted to rest some of its starters. It was a strategy used to keep players from injury while playing on what they considered a hard playing surface. The Sockers also wanted some of their players to avoid the dreaded border wait time.

The Sockers won’t have to worry about crossing the border for a while. They don’t return to Tijuana until late January.

In the meantime, the Sockers will head to the Midwest to take on Louisville (Dec. 17) and Cincinnati (Dec. 18) later this week. San Diego then closes its four-game road trip as they visit the California Cougars Dec. 27.

San Diego returns to the Del Mar arena for an Open Cup match Dec. 29 and a host Cincinnati Jan. 8 to get back into PASL play.
