Festivities mark Independence Day in Mexico

Events include large, free festivals

People on both sides of the border will be able to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day in a variety of events, some expected to draw thousands.

Here's a look at some of the major ones in the region.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY

Mexican Festival, Sept. 10

Up to 10,000 people are expected for a free festival featuring Flaco Elizalde, La Cumbia Diva, Vilma Díaz y La Sonora, Los Ingratos and Pink Army.

The event features mariachi music, Mexican food, children's games, a beer garden, fireworks show and the traditional "grito" delivered by an official from the Mexican consulate.

The event is from 2 to 9:30 p.m. at Larsen Field, in front of the Las Americas Premium Outlets,

Luis Miguel, Sept. 10

Viva México!, Sept. 15

The largest celebration in the region will be the 13th annual "Viva México" festival, sponsored by Univision Radio, expected to draw up to 20,000 people to the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre in Chula Vista.

The Mexico's Consul-General in San Diego, Remedio Gómez, will deliver the traditional "grito." The festivities include Mexican food, drawings and a guest appearance of DJ "El Piolín".

The musical line-up includes Los Dareyes de la Sierra, Los Rieleros del Norte and A.B. Quintanilla, Selena's brother.

Mariachi concert, Sept. 15

Ramón Ayala, Sept. 16

The City of Tijuana is sponsoring this big, free celebration featuring a variety of musical acts and 160 stands, a fireworks show, mechanical games, and the traditional "grito." The entertainment includes Banda Aguacaliente, Beatriz Adriana, Calor Norteño, IMAC Youth Ensemble, Danza folclórica Quetzalli,

Mariachi Águila, Mariachi Los Ahijados, Grupo Los Sentenciados and Grupo Los Tenientes. Starting at 6 p.m., in the traffic circle knowns as "The Scissors," in front of Cecut.

Grito, Sept. 15

Military parade, Sept. 16

Mexican military forces will parade along avenidas Independencia and Centenario. 9 a.m.

La Arrolladora Banda El Limón, Sept. 16.
