Sunny and Cher are up for adoption

Two mutilated puppies will be going to a loving home

Sunny and Cher, two puppies that were found with their ears cut off in Mission Valley and Tijuana, were reunited Tuesday in San Diego, where they are up for adoption.

"They're both happy and healthy. They're going to make great pets for somebody," said county Animal Control Services Lt. Kalani Hudson .

The pups are from the same litter and were only a month-old when they were mutilated for still unknown reasons, Hudson said, while the pups playfully wrestled, barked and followed each other around in a courtyard at the county facility on Gaines Street.

Sunny, a male, was found on November 19th near a Target store in Mission Valley, the wounds on his ears were only days old, Hudson said.

Cher, a female, was found on November 23 on the streets in Tijuana and was treated at the veterinary hospital there.

A hospital assistant who saw news coverage about Sunny informed San Diego County officials about the mutilated dog found in Tijuana and brought her to the county facility last week; County staff named her Cher, a play on the popular singing duo Sonny and Cher.

Hudson said the Department of Animal Services has received hundreds of calls inquiring about the puppies and "stacks" of applications to adopt them; applications are being accepted until December 18th.

Hudson said it's unclear whether the mutilations took place in Tijuana or San Diego, "If it happened in Mexico we wouldn't have jurisdiction," she said.

Hudson said whoever cut the puppies' ears used scissors or a kitchen knife.

She could only speculate why, "It could have been for dog-fighting purposes, though the pups are Lab-German Shepherds, which are not considered a fighting breed. It could have been done to make them look like Pit Bulls also", she said.

Better days are ahead for the two-month-old pups who are close to being adopted, Sunny is living with a foster family and Cher is at the county shelter for now and will transition to a foster home also.
