Bus crash kills woman, injures 26 in Tijuana

Driver was allegedly speeding through curve

TIJUANA – A woman was killed and 26 others injured, three seriously, when a public transit bus flipped over Friday morning, police announced.

According to transit investigators, the driver of the bus of the Azul and Blanco line, Eduardo Efraín Morales Reyes, 30, was driving too fast and lost control on a curve.

The driver attempted to stop the bus but it crashed into the median and turned over. He was detained, and is presumed to have caused the accident, police said.

The accident occurred at 8:50 a.m. on the corner of 16h and Pino Suárez in the historic colonia Libertad, located next to the San Ysidro border crossing.

A total of 23 passengers were slightly injured, four gravely, according to municipal police. One of them, a 43-year-old woman, later died at Clinic No. 20 of the health system IMSS.

The police provided a list on Friday afternoon of those still receiving medical treatment. At IMSS Clinic No. 20: Rosaura Rodríguez Barbosa, 20; Ismael Rubio Moreno, 5; Deyanira Rubio Moreno, 21; and Rodrigo Sánchez Ruiz, 19.

At the Red Cross Hospital: Brenda Rivera Rodríguez, 39; José Antonio Arias González, 44; Reyna Edith Esquer Valenzuela, 22; Yolanda Domínguez Alpos, 50; José Alberto Lucía Bernandiño, 24; Francisco Ríos, 60; and Ana María Ramírez Baiton,52.

At the IMSS Clinic No. 1: Elia Montiel Ramírez, 33; María de los Ángeles Malguana Montiel, 5; Norma Ramírez (no age given); Yiused Rodríguez Robledo, 31; and Cecilia Miranda García, 31.
