Three die in small plane crash in Tijuana

Craft plunged into neighborhood next to airport

TIJUANA – Three people died when a small plane crashed moments after takeoff Monday morning into a neighborhood next to Rodriguez International Airport, authorities said.

They identified the dead as Francisco Cermeño, 60, the pilot; and his passenger, his daughter Olivia Urrea, 17; and Adalberto Ochoa, a mechanic who was killed on the ground at a car shop.

The plane crashed on Álamo and Constitución streets, in colonia Libertad, a short distance from the perimeter of Tijuana’s international airport.

Authorities said the plane was heading to the Los Cabos area in Baja California Sur.

The federal government has begun an investigation.
