Man posed as construction worker at border

Attempted to enter the U.S. illegally

SAN YSIDRO – With all the remodeling work being done at the port of entry, a man figured he could pose as a construction worker and slip into the country illegally.

He figured wrong.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent spotted him walking northbound among the vehicles then saw him walk beside the inspection booths.

The agent yelled for him to stop.

The man obeyed and the agent intercepted him. The man could not present proof that he was a construction worker and he was sent to the secondary inspection area.

There, CBP agents confirmed that he did not have documents to enter the United States and arrested him.

In a release issued Monday, CBP said the incident happened at midday the previous Thursday. The agency identified the man as 39-year-old native of the Mexican state of Querétaro. He’s awaiting prosecution at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

The $517 million remodeling and expansion project picked up steam in June, when authorities began to close several lanes at a time to accommodate construction. The work was suspended for three days in mid-September when scaffolding collapsed on several vehicles, injuring 11 people and construction workers.

The construction has added one more headache for border travelers. On Wednesday morning and early afternoon, the wait time in the regular vehicle lanes stretched to around three hours.
