NEW YORK – Why should Oprah should have all the fun?

Mexican-American filmmaker Robert Rodríguez will launch a television channel called El Rey, with programing in English aimed at Latinos families, Comcast announced Tuesday.

Rodriguez is partnering with executives from FactoryMade Ventures to create the channel, scheduled to launch in January of 2014. The channel will offer action and reality shows, fiction, animated series, as well movies, music, sports and news, said the announcement from Comcast, which owns NBC and Telemundo.

The channel will present the works of prominent Latino producers and public figures.

“As a second-generation Mexican-American and a father of five children I’m excited that viewers like my family will have a place to see themselves and their stories,” Rodriguez said.

The content for El Rey (“the king,” in Spanish) will be produced by Tres Pistoleros Productions, from Rodriguez, and FactoryMade Ventures, according to Variety.

Comcast also announced the creation of another channel in English aimed at Latinos, BabyFirst Americas, targeting children and their parents. The idea is to encourage early childhood development.

The giant cable and Internet company said that channel would be launched in April.
