Latin American network making 'novela' in English

Televisa producing series for Nickelodeon

For the first time, a soap opera from the giant Latin American network Televisa will be produced in English.

This week, José Baston, the network's president of content, said taping had begun on a remake of the 1990's soap opera "Alcanzar Una Estrella" for an English-speaking audience.

This version will be called "Reach for a Star" and will be transmitted by Nickelodeon in prime time, both networks announced.

At least 80, one-hour episodes of the program have been ordered and they will be presented weekdays. The series is being taped in Los Angeles.

This time around, Puerto Rican actor Carlos Ponce and Brittany Underwood are starring in the soap opera, which also features James Franco.

The original "novela" premiered on Televisa in 1990 and starred the former members of the musical group Timbiriche, Mariana Garza and Eduardo Capetillo.

The story revolves around an adolescent whose life changes dramatically when she becomes a star and meets here platonic love.

The soap opera is tentatively scheduled to debut at year's end.
