Rate of deported Guatemalans on the rise

The majority of deportees take place in Mexico.

EFE Agency.- The immigration authorities from Mexico and the United States have deported 21.056 undocumented Guatemalans in 2012, informed an official source.

According to statistics from the General Direction of Immigration (DGM) that were publicized yesterday on the office's internet site, Mexico has deported by land, 11.261 undocumented Guatemalans that were looking to achieve the so called "American Dream".

In 2011, the Mexican authorities deported a total of 31.427 undocumented Guatemalans, a higher number than the 28.090 of 2010.

On the other hand, in 2012, the United States have deported 9.795 illegal immigrants coming from this Central American country, according to official information by DGM. During 2011, the American immigration authorities deported a total of 30.855 Guatemalans against 29.095 from the year 2010.

According to the Foreign Secretary, 1.3 million Guatemalans live in the United States, 60 percent of them as undocumented immigrants.

The president of Guatemala, Otto Perez Molina, has asked the United States a Temporary Protection Status (TPS), for the thousands of immigrants living in this country.

During his participation in the VI Summit of the Americas last week in Cartagena de Indias Colombia, Perez said that he addressed the matter with his colleague of the United States, Barack Obama.

According to Perez Molina, Obama expressed to him his concern on the issue of the Guatemalans, and said that the subject is being analyzed by the secretary of National Security, Janet Napolitano.
