Alleged son of "El Chapo" captured in Mexico

It was the result of "intelligence work", authorities said

Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, son of Mexican capo Joaquín Guzmán Loera, also known by his nickname "El Chapo", was captured today in the State of Jalisco in Mexico's west coast, according to the Mexican Secretary of Marine.

In a brief press release, the Mexican dependency declared that the arrest was made this morning and it was the result of "intelligence work", it also stated that the information available would be furthered upon in the hours to come.

According to Mexican media, Guzmán Salazar was detained in the municipality of Zapopan with another person whose identity is yet to be revealed.

The son of the powerful Cartel of Sinaloa's leader, who is expected to be presented today before the press, was just recently included in the watch list of international drug traffickers by the Treasury Department of the United States.

Also in the list is the leader's former wife, María Alejandrina Salazar Hernández. This measurement means that both their financial assets in the United States are frozen and it also forbids American citizens to make any sort of commercial transaction with them.

Guzmán Salazar was charged alongside his father with multiple drug trafficking charges in Illinois back in 2009, while María Alejandrina Salazar Hernández allegedly supplies material support for the illegal activities the Cartel of Sinaloa has going on, according to the United States.

The US Treasury also put in the list two more of Guzmán's sons: Iván Guzmán Salazar and Ovidio Guzmán López; both for participating of his father's activities, who in turn made it to the list in 2001.

"El Chapo" Guzmán is the maximum leader of Sinaloa's Cartel also called the Cartel of the Pacific; considered the criminal organization with the strongest participation in the illegal substances industry and the widest net of drug distribution in the US.

He's the most wanted criminal in Mexico, over 36 more people, and also has a spot in the Forbes' list of wealthiest men.

Jesús alfredo Guzmán Salazar, according to reports by the Mexican press, is one of three children bore by Guzmán Loera and María Alejandrina Salazar Hernández, his first wife. The other two are César and Iván Archivando.

"El Chapo" Guzmán has had another wife, Griselda López and in 2007 married again, this time with 18 year old Emma Coronel Aspuro, who gave birth to twins in the United States last year.
