Mexico claimed silver and bronze in Women's Archery

Sudden-death closing

The archery event ended amazingly for the Mexican shooters. The Lord’s Cricket Ground witnessed the feat Mexican archers pulled off today.

Aída Román who beat her fellow countrywoman Marinia Avitia during the semifinal round went face to face against Ki Bo from Korea for the Olympic gold.

Though the first set of the final round was loaded with tension and marvelous shots, the Mexican contender was not able to define the set to her favor; it went to South Korea.

Second set started with a 9 for both contestants. The second arrow followed the golden area; the two competitors went ahead with a 9. Both women missed the definitive shot of the 2nd set in a similar fashion earning them an 8. By the end of the third set, the Korean shooter had the upper hand with a 3-1.

Third set started with a 10 for Mexico and an 8 for Korea. The second arrow once again rendered a 10 for the Latin shooter and a 9 this time for the Asian competitor. The 3rd round from the 4th set ended with a 9 for both of them. At the end of this round Mexico and Korea were tied 3 to 3.

During the 4th set’s first round Korea’s shooter got a 10 while Mexico’s one got an 8. They both got their same score for the second round. Earning a 9 for her 3rd shot, Ko Bo won the 4th round.

The last set in the match for the gold medal arrived. The Korean contender had everything on her side until her last arrow missed the mark and gave some hope to the Mexican competitor. When they tied the score, the shooters got one shot at the gold each.

The Mexican contestant had everything in her favor to win the Olympic golden prize but was just inches away from getting it. Aída Román ended up with the 2nd place silver medal.

On her part, Mariana Avitia, also from Mexico, faced Loring Khatuna from the US for the bronze award.

In a match where strong winds were the main challenger, the Mexican archer had the best shots taking advantage of key moments and ended up winning the Olympic medal.

Loring Khatuna seemed pressured and out of focus from her first shot. The high percentage of Mexican public definitely took a toll on her concentration.

Mexico won the first two rounds while the US won the 3rd one. The 4th set that ended up being the definitive one was closed by Avitia in a thrilling fashion. The medal’s owner was defined until the last shot. With a 9 in the golden area, Mariana was awarded the bronze ending an excellent Olympic contribution in the Women’s Individual Archery competition.
