Xolos players called for US-Mexico friendly at Azteca

Corona, Castillo named to United States roster

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann released the list of 22 players that will be on the roster when the Americans take on Mexico in a friendly at Estadio Azteca Wednesday.

And two of those players on that list are starters for Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles.

Defender Edgar Castillo and midfielder Joe Corona are part of Klinsmann's list.

This will be Corona's second call up with the senior team. He was summoned for a friendly against Scotland and a World Cup qualifier in June. Corona, who is yet to play for the United States senior team in an official match, played 22 minutes as a second half substitute against Scotland.

Corona was on the bench for a World Cup qualifier against Guatemala. His chances at playing against Mexico at Estadio Azteca could be slim. Klinsmann named a handful of veteran midfielders to this roster. Maurice Edu, Jermaine Jones, Brek Shea, Danny Williams, Jose Torres and DaMarcus Beasley are on the list. The latter two also play in the Mexican Primera Division.

"We are always watching the Mexican clubs," Klinsmann said from Mexico City in a conference call with national media Sunday afternoon. "Joe and Edgar are starters in Tijuana. We've followed them closely."

Michael Orozco, Herculez Gomez, Beasley, Corona and Castillo all play in Mexico's First Division.

Corona opened eyes with his play during the Olympic qualifiers in March. That's where he started on the Under-23 team that failed to qualify for the London games. The National City native and Sweetwater High alumn, scored four goals during the tournament, including a hat trick in a 6-0 win against Cuba.

Castillo could end up as part of Klinsmann's starting backline against Mexico. He has six caps with the senior team. His last cap came in a scoreless draw against Canada in early June. Castillo missed World Cup qualifiers against Antigua and Barbuda and Guatemala due to an injury.

Landon Donovan and Tim Howard are also part of Klinsmann's latest call up. Clint Dempsey is missing from the list. Klinsmann said Dempsey is not ready to leave his club, Fulham, at the time.

"He is in the preseason with his club," Klinsmann said. "He is not in rhythm yet."
