What to expect this Labor Day weekend

Sales, long waiting times at the border and closed offices

SAN DIEGO. – All city, state and federal offices will be closed on Monday September 3 on observance of Labor Day, just like the Courts and libraries. The postal service won't be running either.

Banks will also remain closed due to Labor Day.

The Mexican Consulate in San Diego as well as the US Consulates in Tijuana won't be operating.

In addition, there's a huge turnout expected to the beaches by people looking to enjoy "the last weekend of summer."

To guarantee the community's safety, the San Diego Police Department is joining with law enforcement throughout the state for the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. DUI/Driver's License Checkpoints are scheduled for Friday, August 31, 2012 and Saturday, September 1 2012 at undisclosed locations within the city limit beginning at 9:00 p.m. A third partnership checkpoint will be held on Monday, September 3, 2012 and will begin at 4:00 p.m.

With them, they hope to prevent incidents, mainly people driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). According to San Diego Police Department, violators will face jail time, loss of their driver licenses, or being sentenced to use ignition interlocks.

It's safe to assume that long waiting times are to be expected when trying to go from one country to another.

Last year, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processed over three million border-crossing travelers during what is considered one of the busiest weekends of the year for the border.

"With increasing numbers of travelers coming to the U.S. from abroad, CBP continually seeks means of improving wait times through efficiencies such as upgraded facilities, different queuing techniques and other means such as the Ready Lanes at land ports of entry, AM radio broadcasts at some Southwest border land ports of entry and enhanced signage", authorities stated in a press release.

It is recommended for travelers to possess Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) documents like laser visas emitted after 2008, US passport cards, SENTRI or the newest green cards as well as using the Ready Lanes available both in San Ysidro and Otay.

The community south of the border takes advantage this weekend of the sales at most US stores. It should be noted that malls and stores will remain open.

Most of them have already published sales and discounts on their official webpages; it is advisable that customers check them to be up to date with the news.

For the football fans, Labor Day reminds them that next Thursday the NFL thrills start again.

San Diego will spring back into action until September 10 when he visits archrival Raiders in Oakland.
