How to Enjoy the Taste of Beer

A practical guide to properly appreciate the beverage

Flavor. First take a sip and rinse your mouth with it so it soaks your taste buds, then take a bigger drink swirling it around while you try to identify the different flavors.

During the tasting you can perceive: a) the body of the beer, the feeling of viscosity: a beer with a full body feels dense, while one of thin body feels very light, almost like water; b) the carbonation, is it effervescent or smooth?; and c) the beer's finish, how is it once it goes through your throat? Is it astringent, metallic, bitter, sweet, soft or harsh? How much alcohol does it have?

The last point to check is the memory a beer leaves after having drinking it: Does it invite you to drink it again? Is it balanced (none of its components overshadows the rest) or unbalanced?

At the end of the day you decide whether you stay faithful to your brand or start tasting around for something different, if you decide to venture I hope this guidance is of use next time you have a beer in front of you.
